The Importance of Loving Exercise

I am the first to admit that exercise is not necessarily something that I’ve always loved to do…until now. I used to MAKE myself go to the gym and sweat through a treadmill run/walk and then a weight routine. I do not like weights, at all. I enjoy running but unfortunately my feet do not, damn plantar fasciitis.

A few months ago, a dear friend of mine introduced me to Zumba. I am now in love. I joined the dance studio and now I regularly do Zumba, Zumba Toning, TRX and other classes that are offered there. The hour(s) that I’m there fly by, and I don’t feel like I’m exercising. Not to say that it isn’t challenging, but I’m having so much fun that I forget that it’s actual exercise. I am also making friends there and since it’s 99.9% women there (I’ve actually only seen one man in the classes and he’s old enough to be my dad) I don’t worry about being ogled and hit on while I’m working out.

Now I didn’t write this blog post to convert y’all to Zumba (but really, check it out!) but to explain the importance of loving exercise. If you don’t enjoy exercise, you’re less likely to do it. Any exercise is better than nothing at all. If you only like walking, that’s great! If you only like yoga, fantastic. I know that “experts” (I use that term loosely because so many people think that they are experts about exercise) say that we need X amount of cardio at X level and then X amount of strength training each week but to me that’s a load of crap. Yes, we need to exercise, preferably more days than we don’t, but really pretty much any exercise is better than no exercise at all.

The important thing is that you find an activity that you enjoy, and then you’re more likely to stick with it. Not only will your body become healthier, so will your mind. I’ve found that through regular exercise I am not only losing inches, I am also losing stress and sleepless nights :)

If you have an exercise that you love, please share it in the comments! I love to learn about people and how they are staying healthy!

I love yoga! We just moved and I haven’t yet found the time to get out and find a yoga studio. It’s amazing how it tones your body and improves flexibility.

Other than that.. hiking. If I could go hiking as much as I wanted, I would be in great shape.
